When we categorize other people, we use stereotypes. Stereotypes might produce injustice when we use them to devalue other people prejudice and treat others less favorably based on their group membership discrimination. I am interested in the causes, prevalence, consequences, and reduction of social categorization with regard to different gender, sexual orientation, religious, ethnic, and age groups.
Specifically, I analyze the following questions:. Is it advantageous or detrimental for humanity if we believe in a free will? Most scholars argue that it is advantageous because believing in a free will mobilizes self-control and enhances socially responsible behavior. Like Schmidt-Salomon, we define the belief in a free will Willensfreiheit more narrowly than is usually the case in psychology and distinguish it from a belief in free action Handlungsfreiheit.
We developed a questionnaire to measure these beliefs and are now able to analyze their consequences. Divergent opinions dissent can be beneficial for decision making in groups e. Muslims and LGBTI people shared their experiences of discrimination and discussed their values and beliefs on issues as religion, family, and sexuality. Queerformat educates professionals who work with children and adolescents, e. They focus on the dimensions of gender and sexual orientation. As a member of their scientific advisory board, I provide relevant research results on prejudice, discrimination, and how to reduce them as well as on sexual orientation and gender.
I give trainings on how to identify and reduce discrimination, e. These trainings are based on the current state of research on the causes of stereotypes, prejudice, and discrimination, and how to reduce them. A central message of the trainings is that prejudice and discrimination are omnipresent and should preferably be treated by providing knowledge and enhancing empathy instead of moral outrage.
At Humboldt-Universität zu Berlin, I give lectures, seminars, and tutorials on social psychology, diversity in organizations, leadership in organizations, team effectiveness.
